Commentary: Book Review: The Carbon Buster's Home Energy Handbook

In this day of record energy costs, "The Carbon Buster's Home Energy Handbook" (New Society Publishers, Gabriola Island, BC, Canada, 2007) offers timely advice on how to decrease your home energy bills along with your ecological footprint. The book focuses on the effectiveness of using certain products and technologies, and compares the efficiency of various models of household appliances like refrigerators, washing machines and computers. It also examines how a home's energy usage would be affected by installing new windows, solar panels or geothermal systems, and how fireplaces and wood-burning stoves influence efficiency.

2. Be unpredictable. Being boring isnt sexy, but a little bit of unpredictability most certainly is. Dont always wear the same outfit or style your hair in the same way, especially if you frequent a venue. Adding a distinctive touch to your appearance like a bracelet from your kayaking trip in Brazil is another great way to ensure that you get noticed and have an interesting story to tell your female admirers.

The author, Godo Stoyke, claims to have helped save clients $16 million in utility bills in his capacity as president of Carbon Busters Inc., a consulting company based in Canada. Stoyke lives in an off-grid, solar-powered home and drives a gas-electric Prius.
